DIY Small Format Snoot – Silver Edition

As I’ve mentioned before, a large part of my job is to make portraits of executives at my firm. The new visual identity for the firm which was officially launched today calls for environmental-style portraits rather than studio shots. The more of these that I do, the more I realize how similar all the shots in our office is becoming. There are only so many straight portraits I can make in our building before they all start looking the same. […]

Canon Outsourcing Lenses

Although I have never really paid much mind to the Canon/Nikon “whose lens is bigger” contest that rages on photoblogs across the internets, I did find it interesting to hear that demand for Canon’s digital lenses has increased so dramatically that they’ve outsourced the manufacturing to Taiwan. Those of you worried that a move away from home could compromise quality: Don’t. Canon already makes lenses for film cameras in Taiwan, and these are necessarily of a higher quality (due to […]

Self Portrait At Work with Poster

Alternate title: “I’m Too Busy To Play With My New Camera and I Am Therefore Grumpy” Poster in the background is a beautiful photo of Zhang Ziyi by Davis Factor for Corbis. As a side note, Corbis used to send out these awesome posters as promos but their rep told me recently that they stopped because of environmental concerns. Damn it people, we need to stop wasting resources elsewhere so that I can start getting free, large format posters again….

Photo in TimeOut New York

I had a photo published in TimeOut New York this week. It was from a photoshoot of a theater company that I did some pro bono work for last year. It’s the size of a large postage stamp, but still, always cool to see your work in print. Update: Here’s a link to the article for those of you who don’t get TimeOut New York

Lion Versus Model

You gotta love being a photographer. You get to shoot all kinds of cool stuff, like women doing martial arts with lions and shit. Check out this photoshoot (photog is off camera right). Kickass. Photographer: “Ok yeah, that looks great … beautiful … give me some intensity..” Photographer: “Excellent, show me some real movement … can I get you smile just a bit … beautiful …” Lion: “You know what? This dude to behind me holding my leash? I weigh, […]

Fette Sau and Beer

On Friday night I joined some friends at a BBQ joint in Brooklyn called Fette Sau (Fat Sow for the who’s at home). It’s an amazing place with tons of great food, dozens of varieties of rare and interesting bourbons, and of course lots of beer. The first time I went to Fette Sau we were drinking beer by the gallon – this time we were a little more responsible and drank it by the half gallon. The food is […]

Save Polaroid

Apparently people aren’t willing to let instant film go gently into the dark. SavePolaroid.com On February 8, 2008, Polaroid Corporation announced that it will discontinue production of all instant film. This site will document the aftermath of this announcement and will serve as a home-base for the effort to convince another company to begin producing the cherished technology that Polaroid has so carelessly abandoned. This site is not about saving Polaroid, the company, rather the remarkable invention of Edwin Land, […]

Hardcopy

In the digital world of Flickr and the plethora of online photography applications, we don’t often think about making actual prints. Hell, Polaroid has even stopped making film. In my staff photographer position, 90% of my work goes straight into printed publications, but rarely do we have a need for actual photography prints. I find this interesting, especially because prints where the basis of my interest in photography until I started shooting professionally. When I was a kid running around […]

Real People

I am envious of the big name photographers. Duh. No, seriously. I wish I was in a position where I could shoot beautiful and handsome models all day long, models who are being paid to be there, models who know how to act natural, and understand how to pose, and of course, understand what they have to do to look beautiful on film. Of course I don’t begrudge other photographers their success. My audience thus far has been corporate, and […]

Business Traveller

Note: This post was written Thursday evening at SFO in California I am currently sitting at a cafe in SFO, awaiting a flight that doesn’t begin boarding for almost three hours. I have a beer and an electric socket for the laptop, so I’m in good shape until I have to get up to go to the bathroom and risk losing my spot. Going to the bathroom is one of the things that I like least about traveling alone. When […]
